“Fight for the things you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Yesenia Monique is a Los Angeles transplant who believes in the power of art and its ability to transform the world. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she discovered her purpose after moving to California during her six year tour in the United States Coast Guard. As a veteran, she has realized the difference art can make in self healing and overcoming traumatic experiences. Not only can art be used as a personal outlet, it can also tackle complex social discourses as a mechanism for change.
Yesenia graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from California State University Long Beach with an emphasis in publication and packaging design. In her personal time she enjoys being a mother of two, throwing kitchen dance parties, and a nice cup of coffee with a good book.
A message from the Designer -
We often try to find meaning in life; I believe love is the root of purpose. If you truly love what you do, you will find fulfillment. My love for design drives me to create that change that I want to see in the world. I believe art pushes boundaries, it has the power to start movements by simply existing. Design is the ultimate form of communication; it is the art of combining the verbal and the visual, which in turn create powerful messages. In my view, design should raise awareness and motivate social change or at the very least, spark inspiration. As a minority and a woman, I am aware of the importance in fighting for your voice to be heard. I have heard wise words that mention you should fight for the things that you care about, but do so in a way that will lead others to join you. Design is my vessel to create social change and to raise the expectations of what can be achieved in society. Design has power and I believe in using that power to transform lives by creating emotional connections. I have found that art can be a great healer of trauma, I hope to help others find healing through their experiences with my own art, while also raising awareness of traumatic issues that are commonly ignored.
Because my work is concept driven, I often seek ways to embody a brand’s mission and values, while also creating meaningful messages and experiences. I believe design should transcend the boundaries of time and culture and I aspire to create work that remains current. To design long-lasting work, one has to be educated on both concepts of time and culture. I love studying art history and I am a world traveler. I believe those who travel view the world differently, think differently, and tend to express this within their own work. I am Puerto Rican, but my travels have led me to fascinating countries and immersion into a multitude of cultures. I see people differently, I have served for something greater than myself, I have risked my life to save others, I know compassion and I know connection. As social beings we are often driven to seek fulfillment by helping others, through design I will help those without a voice and those who struggle to find one. As a designer, I bring my experience, my passion, and devotion to all my work.
